The National Focus: Why Green Hydrogen is Crucial for Germany

Green hydrogen is the key to decarbonizing sectors that cannot be directly electrified. For Germany as a hub of industry and technology, establishing a hydrogen economy is of strategic importance.

Decarbonization of Industry: German industry faces the enormous task of decarbonizing its "hard-to-abate" processes (e.g., in steel and chemical production). Green hydrogen is often the only realistic solution to replace fossil-based raw materials and fuels.

Future of the Logistics Hub: To secure the long-term competitiveness of Germany's transport and logistics sector, switching to sustainable fuels (e-fuels) for heavy-duty transport, shipping, and aviation is essential. Green hydrogen is their fundamental component.

Sector Coupling and Grid Stability: Large-scale electrolyzers in Germany are the perfect link between sectors. They can react flexibly to surplus electricity from wind and solar farms, stabilize the power grid, and make green energy usable for industry, heating, and mobility.

Implementing the National H₂ Strategy: The German federal government is massively promoting the development of a hydrogen economy. We help to implement this national strategy with concrete, economically viable projects in Germany.

VIRDI leverages its international project development experience to actively shape the establishment of a hydrogen economy in Germany.

Our Power-to-X Value Chain: From Green Energy to Final Product

A Power-to-X project is a complex value chain. VIRDI masters and manages all the necessary steps to turn green electricity into a valuable, sustainable product.

1.Renewable Energy (Power):
Every project begins at the source: clean electricity. We secure access to large quantities of cost-effective solar and wind energy as the foundation for competitive hydrogen production.

2. Electrolysis (to-H₂):
In modern, large-scale electrolysis plants, we use green electricity to split water into oxygen and high-purity green hydrogen (H₂).

3. Further Processing (to-X):
The green hydrogen produced can either be used directly or processed into derivative products—for example, into green methanol for shipping or synthetic fuels (e-fuels) for aviation.

4. Overall Project Development:
VIRDI manages the entire process: from site analysis and use-case definition in Germany to permitting, financing, and construction, all the way to the long-term operation of the plant.

Experience

Why Partner with VIRDI for Your Hydrogen Project in Germany?

Holistic Project Development

We manage the entire value chain—from the cost-efficient generation of renewable energy to securing offtake agreements for the final green product.

Proven Implementation Experience

With our first plant for the production of green methanol in Spain (planned commissioning in 2027), we prove our ability to take complex Power-to-X projects from planning to reality.

Strong International Pipeline

A project pipeline of 820 MW of electrolyzer capacity across various markets provides us and our partners with investment security and valuable scaling experience.

Focus on Economic Viability

We develop projects where renewable energy is cheapest, creating a competitive basis for green hydrogen products. We apply this expertise to the design of projects in Germany.

A 4-Phase Approach

1. Strategic Analysis & Use Case:
Together with you, we analyze your needs and define the most economically and technically sensible use case for green hydrogen in your context.

2. Project Design & Feasibility Study:
We design the overall technical concept, including the electrolyzer, logistics, and any further processing, and create a detailed economic forecast.

3. Permitting & Financing:
We manage all complex permitting procedures for your project in Germany and structure the financing.

4. Plant Construction & Commissioning:
We manage the construction and commissioning of the entire Power-to-X plant until the first green hydrogen is produced.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Green Hydrogen

What does "Power-to-X" (P2X) mean?

"Power-to-X" describes the conversion of (green) electricity ("Power") into another energy carrier or raw material ("X"). The "X" can be hydrogen (Power-to-Gas), a liquid fuel like methanol or kerosene (Power-to-Liquid), or a chemical feedstock.

Why is this hydrogen called "green"?

Hydrogen is "green" only when it is produced by the electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources (like solar or wind). The process is therefore CO₂-free. In contrast, "grey" hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels like natural gas.

For which industries in Germany is green hydrogen most relevant

It is particularly relevant for the steel industry (as a reducing agent), the chemical industry (as a raw material, e.g., for ammonia), refineries, and for all companies with high-temperature processes that currently rely on natural gas.

What is green methanol and why is it important?

Green methanol is produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂. It is a climate-neutral, liquid energy carrier that can be easily transported and stored with current technology. It is considered one of the most important future fuels for decarbonizing international shipping.

Is green hydrogen economically viable today?

Economic viability depends heavily on the cost of renewable electricity and the scale of the electrolysis plants. Due to falling prices for solar and wind power, as well as rising CO₂ costs, green hydrogen is becoming competitive in an increasing number of applications. We design our projects for maximum economic viability from the outset.
